It seems no changes made to server, backup just started to fail. Was able to create a job in NTBackup manually and schedule this and it runs with no problems, just SBS backup always failing with this error. Have tried the suggestions from the MS URL which didn't resolve the issue.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What make/model tape drive do you have?  SCSI?  USB?

FYI, 831664 was resolved with Service Pack 1.  If you haven't already applied SP1 to your SBS, it is strongly recommended that you do so.  It fixed literally hundreds of issues.  See http://sbsurl.com/sp1 for details.

Hi Jeff

The drive is a HP DAT72 USB drive. Service Pack 1 is applied to the SBS box already. And the version of BKPRUNNER we are using is 5.2.2893.0
Have tried the suggestions in the other link, got users to run a cleaning tape and I am now getting :

It seems NT Backup still wont launch from SBS, but is now giving us a different error.
Jeffrey Kane - TechSoEasyPrincipal ConsultantCommented:
You may have resolved it... but it just needs a bit of a jolt.  Click on the Configure Backup wizard and select to NOT use SBS Backup.  Then finish out the wizard.  Reboot your server, and rerun the wizard once again to configure backup.

Seems the reboot didn't resolve the issue. After a scheduled reboot last night the same "Backup error finished with error code 0X80070423.
" error persists.
Any idea what that error actually means?
Jeffrey Kane - TechSoEasyPrincipal ConsultantCommented:
Well, it could be a number of things...and while I haven't seen that particular error code, your original one was definitely common.  (see http://snipurl.com/i8e7 for just how popular).

At this point, it's only a guess... but I'd review this KB to see if that's your cause:

Have accepted this answer, event though the new issue is still outstanding and unresolved, TechSoEasy did assist to resolve the original error message.
Jeffrey Kane - TechSoEasyPrincipal ConsultantCommented:
If it was unresolved, but you are now getting a separate error message, then you should post a new question.
