I tried looking there and of all the drivers, I found one from Cypress that can detect the hard disk, but the disk does not display a drive letter in win explorer. That's my problem

Right click on "My Computer" & select Manage, then go to "Disk Management".  In there you should see the drive, right click on it & select "Change...drive letter".  Then change it to something that isn't already in use.

See if that works.

I beleive that means the device is either disabled or not started...go into Device Manager & make sure the device is enabled...if that doesn't work, try to reboot now that you have changed the drive letter.

Have you tried to reboot?    If so, then try to uninstall the device, reboot & let it re-install it.

It sounds like there is a driver problem with it.  Who makes this device?  Have you used it on this PC before?  Can you use it on another PC WITHOUT trying to install a driver first?

I tried yesterday with 3 laptos, 2 IBM ThinkPad and my toshiba , it is same thing....the drivers is cypress USB mass storage driver and the company is cypress semiconductor ...and when i installed the drivers it take a long of time, and did not assign driver ....

But did you try it without the drivers?

It sounds to me that there is a driver issue & you need to find the proper driver for Windows XP.

Does the manufacturer have a website (I haven't ever heard of them before). If it isn't a device natively supported by Windows, you may be out of luck

castellanos_lauAuthor Commented:
i know, it is not signed by microsoft, i check in www.cypress.com, but I think this company only did the software...

Its probably a USB power issue, Can you hear the HDD spinning properly or do you hear something like kluck, kluck,
IF you hear an unusual sound its a power issue. Less than 500mA
