Quantum VS160 tapes compatable with Quantum V4 drives

Hi everybody..
after reading about the new dlt v4 160/320 drives from quantum which led me to beleive that the new drive was compatable with the older tapes we currently use in our VS160 drive it looked like a no brainer.. drive was cheap and could use the old cartridges and have twice the capacity.
after speaking with quantum tech support (we have a problem here), they tell me if it is a new VS160 tape it will work fine.. and if it was previously written to by a vs160 drive, we can read it.. However once it's formatted by the vs160 the dlt-v4 won't write to it (or format it)..
Now they tell me that we can degausse the old tapes and then we can write to them.. After a little research I find these to be expensive
$1000 or more (could buy new tapes for that amt..).. or we could send them out to a service to have them degaussed (can't find one)..
Just wondering if anyone has run into this and come up with a reasonable solution?

Thanks in advance for any help..

Well, that sounds simple.. However I can't find any information that a TV degausser can do this job, in fact most of the ones that specifiy they can do DLT operate at 4000 Gauss+.. Have you actually used one of these to degauss a dlt tape and it worked?
also, what kind of program are you referring to? I assume some utility? (I have tried dltsage but it won't do it)..
I have also sen a reference to a sony utility but can't sem to locate that one..
Thanks..

>>>no, but it seems to be a simple quick method
I would try also, modify a tape or a video tape recorder and erase at least the begining of the tape that should contain data that do not permit dlt v4 160/320 drives to format it.

>>>maybe i can search for it in my catalogs if i know its name.

also
-try and strip one cartridge, reverse the tape so that will start with the end.
-cut some tape from the begining
I never tried that

Thanks for all the input, I have called a number of companies that sell these products and I have a definate no-way on the TV unit..
I have found a company that will deguass DLT class tapes for around $3 per tape.. Minimum 10 plus you pay shipping..
In my search a unit that will actually deguass a DLT tape starts around $2000 (evidently DLT's are tough to do, I gahter it's specific to the width of the tape and a powerful deguasser is needed)..
Posting this if it may help anyone else:
The company is Athana and the contact is warnold@athana.com (posted as info as I haven't used their service yet).

I will leave this question open for a few days for further comment as I wouldn't know where to begin cutting DLT tape.
Thanks..
