validation controls refresh screen

could it be that adding validation controls to a page make the screen refreshed on every button click?
I have a screen with a textbox, label, button and a customvalidator or requiredvalidator control.
clicking the button displays alert message.
if there is any validation control in the screen then when the message is displayed the screen is refreshed.
If there is no validation control the screen is not refreshed.
Can it be??????????

The refresh maybe coming from once you change a control (in a form) it calls the Forms action method and runs any script needed (in this case the alert message).

I am saying that I made a test with validation control and without. and the alert message is javascript and it is not
suppose to make the refresh. Any other suggestions?
Are you using ASP.NET with server side validation controls?
In this case, your behavior is normal, as the validation is server side - so the foirm will be posted to itself (autopostback) to check the values.

Yet I am not using the server side validation controls so the problem stays: Can I use a master page with menu control
that navigate to content pages without having the refresh? I found that the menu control doesn't make the refresh if it is taget to a frame. so again Is it possible to combine the master page with menu control and content pages and frames?  or do I have to remove the master and content pages and to work with a regular page with an iframe in it and instead of the content pages to have regular pages that will be taget to the iframe?
