Generic Malware.a!zip - how to check for and eliminate

My friend received an email from me with an image attachment.  We think it released a virus/trojan/worm.  When he did a Norton Scan he got the name Generic Malware.a!zip.  I searched Norton - but saw no reference.

I scanned and found no virus.

How can I make sure my machine isn't sending out virus to my friends?

Could this virus come from another machine and spoof as if it was me?  My email address is in my friends outlook address book and his email is in mine.

Thanks for the help.

"Could this virus come from another machine and spoof as if it was me?"

Yes, that is the case in almost 100% of the infected emails today, i.e. the return address is spoofed. The viruses do this in order to confuse the recipient and make it harder to contact the real sender.

If you have scanned your system then you can be pretty sure it was not coming from your system.

To be extra safe, I recommend an online scan by going to:

and doing an on-line scan with the yellow "Full Service Scan" button there.
