IBM Thinkpad R51 screen stays black after resume

Hi there,

I have an IBM Thinkpad model R51. I use it for my work and have a strange issue when resuming from stand-by mode. The problem is not consequent it happens sometimes after two stand-by / resume actions but it can also take a week for the problem to occur. All lights below the screen turn on normally and you can see the HDD light blink, but no screen to see what you are doing :(

The only solution is to hold the power button and to resume with a cold boot which takes ages with this machine by the way.

The R51 has Windows XP pro fully patched with service pack 2 and all security patches loaded.
Hibernation is turned off
No application or system messages occur in the event viewer after the event.

My colleague has the same issue with his R51 no solution found so far.

Hope you guys can help.

I use the IBM Thinkvantage software installer to keep up-to-date. Just checked for new updates and found a new BIOS update utility. I will install the patch and will run some tests. This testing may take up to a week if this is the solution to this problem.

Thanks for the tip.

Points will offcourse follow if this is the answer  ;)
Just updated the BIOS and tested one stand-by resume and already noticed a change in behaviour. Don't want to cheer to soon but the screen came back a lot sooner then before...

Keep you posted, still not fully convinced that this is the solution
ok....

(insert small cheer)

:-)
Works perfectly, it has been a week without a reboot and still going from stand-by to operational without any problems!!

thanks for the tip..
Awesome!!

You're welcome and Thank you!
Aaarghh... one day after I have given you the points the problem is back :( talk about Murphy's law.

I noticed that I have put the laptop in stand-by mode when docked in the thinkpad port replicator at the office and then tried to resume when undocked at home. I also have the same port replicator at home so I will do some testing with this.

Through the port replicator are a power, USB mouse, ps/2 keyboard and network cable connected. I don't use an external monitor what will be an obvious question.

(and yes I haven't been in the office for over a week, today was the first time since last Monday)

Suggestions are welcome.
:-(

Ok..post back your results after you tested.
