Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word, Version=

I am trying to use the Word Object Model in my app.
When i use the app locally i dont have any problems but when i put on the remote server i get this error....

Parser Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Guessing but i thought i needed to copy the MSWORD.OLB file to C:\prog~\Office\office11\ but i still get the same error.??

What do i need to do to get this to work.

I have office 2003 installed on my pc but not on my server??

As a side note..i also get this error
Parser Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, Version=10.2.3600.0

when i have crystal report assemblies in the config file??? What am i missing on my server?

Strangely it highlights this line.
<add name="ScriptModule" type="Microsoft.Web.Services.ScriptModule"/> (Atlas stuff)
But when i remove the crystal assembly stuff from config file all is ok??

You will have to install MS OFfice on your server if you want to use its services to do whatever you are tryig to do. SImply copying OLB files is not going to help. Mind it that MS Word is a single threaded COM object which can become a bottle neck in high stress web applications. And also you will have to modify permisisons for the app to allow ASPNET user to instantiate it.

If you are using Crystal stuff in your app then make sure that you have them in your bin folder on your server or in GAC.

Do i need to have all of office installed or simply Word for this to work.

I cant believe there is no dll or anything that you can make use of to work this.

I am not to concerned about the bottleneck, this part of the app will only have a max of 20 Concurrent users.

What crystal stuff do i need in the that the merge module stuff from ??

    Accepted Solution

Yes, you will have to install Word (only) on the server. Office is not a reusable component that MS supplies. Its an aplication for which MS expects people to buy license.

I do not know how Crystal is being used in your application. But whatever assemblies you are refering to, put them in Bin folder under your web app. There is no need to put them in GAC.
