Can Send But Not Receive Mail

Just finished setting up my Exchange server, and I cannot receive e-mail.

I have already made sure that port 25 is open and that my isp allows traffic through there.

I have also verified that my MX record is correct.

Where in system manager can I check to mk sure that the receiving portion of exchange is working?

It either works or it doesn't.
Go to dnsreport.com and enter your domain name. See whether it reports back the correct IP address, and if so, whether it connects. If it doesn't connect then you have to look at why SMTP traffic isn't getting through. Could be your firewall, could be that ports aren't being forwarded to the correct internal IP address.

For outbound traffic, attempt to telnet to port 25.

Start with your server. Telnet to port 25 of the server's IP address.

telnet 192.168.1.1 25

You should get a response. If the box just sits there blinking, the SMTP isn't working, or isn't bound to that address.

Then try and connect outside.
Similar rules. Start with your ISPs SMTP Server.

telnet mail.isp.net 25
where mail.isp.net is the name of the ISPs email server. Does it connect? If not then port 25 is blocked, probably at the firewall.

Then go outside of your ISP.

telnet maila.microsoft.com 25

Again if it blinks and there is no response, then port 25 is blocked.

Simon.

On the server, when i go to the cmd and type (telnet serverIP 25) I get the following:

220 FQDN Microsoft ESMTP Mail Service Version: 6.0.3790.1830 ready at
wed, 26 Apr 2006 14:39:41 -0400
-

with a blinking cursor waiting for me to input something. After a couple of minutes of me waiting it times out.

I tried all 3 scenarios and I seem to get a response from each one

If all three generate a response, then the SMTP server is working on the Exchange side, and the traffic can get out to the Internet. What about the dnsreport for inbound?

Simplify Active Directory Administration

Administration of Active Directory does not have to be hard.  Too often what should be a simple task is made more difficult than it needs to be.The solution?  Hyena from SystemTools Software.  With ease-of-use as well as powerful importing and bulk updating capabilities.

ran dnsreport.com on my web site and this came up, what do they mean could this be the problem

INFO Acceptance of domain literals WARNING: One or more of your mailservers does not accept mail in the domain literal format (user@[0.0.0.0]). Mailservers are technically required RFC1123 5.2.17 to accept mail to domain literals for any of its IP addresses. Not accepting domain literals can make it more difficult to test your mailserver, and can prevent you from receiving E-mail from people reporting problems with your mailserver. However, it is unlikely that any problems will occur if the domain literals are not accepted (mailservers at many common large domains have this problem).

saf.tzo.com's postmaster@[216.75.195.46] response:
    >>> RCPT TO:<postmaster@[216.75.195.46]>
    <<< 501 : domain literals not allowed

PASS Open relay test OK: All of your mailservers appear to be closed to relaying. This is not a thorough check, you can get a thorough one here.
saf.tzo.com OK: 550 relay not permitted

Domain literals will not be the cause of the problem. If that is the only problem it threw up, and it was able to connect to your servers on your external domain name, then as far as I can tell, everything is set correctly. You just need to wait for DNS propagation to complete before all external email will flow in.

Okay how about this one, I went to DNSreport.com and ran the mail test on a e-mail address and I got the following:

Getting MX record for acicardio.com... Got it!

Host Preference IP(s) [Country] saf.tzo.com. 0 216.75.195.46 [US] acicardio.tzo.com. 10 24.136.111.100 [US] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1:  Try connecting to the following mailserver:
         saf.tzo.com. - 216.75.195.46

Step 2:  If unsuccessful in step 1, try connecting to the following mailserver:
         acicardio.tzo.com. - 24.136.111.100

Step 3:  If still unsuccessful, queue the E-mail for later delivery.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trying to connect to all mailservers:

   saf.tzo.com. - 216.75.195.46  [Successful connect: Got a good response [250 Accepted]]
acicardio.tzo.com. - 24.136.111.100  [Could not connect: Got an unknown MAIL FROM response: 454 5.7.3 Client does not have permission to submit mail to this server.

Have you disabled anonymous permission on the SMTP Virtual Server? If so, then you need to enable it again.

The error log means nothing.

With anonymous enabled, do you get the same error message in dnsreport?
