I previously successfully installed IE7 beta some months ago but beta 2 installation fails.  I followed the steps to fix registry permissions as indicated in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925 but the installation still fails.  The installation log is below and I would appreciate advice as to what other problems are preventing successfull installation.

Yes, I'm the only user and I'm administrator.  Interestingly, when I checked the users' list, I saw a strange name consisting of letters and numbers and it was set for limited access.  I don't know how that got in there but I deleted it anyway.

Download Ewido, http://www.ewido.net/en/download/, install, open program, check for updates, restart computer, press F8 before windows logo appears, select safe mode, open Ewido, run full system scan. let Ewido delete all it finds, if anything is called serious by Ewido, disable Norton's Goback, and run Ewido again.

No bad or unexpected items from Hijackthis scan.  Ewido scan in safe mode resulted only in a few tracking cookies in Mozilla which were removed.  Norton Goback not installed in this computer.

Below is the IE7 newsgroup that has this problem.

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?query=cannot+install+ie7+beta2&dg=microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general&cat=en_US_36ed591d-fc54-44b3-9105-d11e44fb83c3&lang=en&cr=US&pt=&catlist=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

I found this

1. Open regedit
2. go to HKCU,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
3. in right panel, right click, new and create a REG_SZ type, renamed by InstalledByUser

Microsoft recently issued a registry error tool (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=eb35fa6d-f4c3-44a6-8d01-5972854c0845&displaylang=en) which first listed these errors after attempting to install IE7.

5/6/2006 9:05:57 AM
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.application
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1

I fixed the permissions for the .application error but the permissions for the second error (bootstrap.xaml.1) are OK yet the errors persist..  The second installation resulted in:

ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1
ACL too tight: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bootstrap.xaml.1

which shows that the .application no longer produces an error.  At this point, I don't know what more I can do to eliminate the bootstrap error.  The Full  Control and Read checkboxes are checked for Administrator just as the corrected .application key now are.  I do notice that the bootstrap key does not have any value listed. It just shows Default.

I tried adding InstalledByUser with no change.  Perhaps someone can look at their registry setting for the boorstrap entry and see if it is any different from mine.

Installation failed again.  I think I will use Mozilla which has many of the IE7 features already built-in.  Maybe we should close this issue until Vista or another update to IE7 beta comes out.  Looks like others are having the same problem as I.  Thanks for the help.

@bobengel...Hi, I just got back from vacation...

Well Beta2 is just bleeding edge technology and with that said, the likelihood of heavy support is NOT there.  The ultimate solution would be to reinstall our entire operating system.  Does that sound feasible?

Hi Irwin,

Reinstalling the OS would probably clear up the problem along with some others but I hesitate to do that so long is the computer is working OK for the most part.  It means reinstalling SP2 and all of the security updates as I have an older version of XP Professional and never prepared a reinstallation disk with a slip-stream of SP2.  I think I'll wait for VISTA or a beta 3 version of IE7.  Thanks for your help.  How do we close out this project?
