USB backup drives Drive letter problem

I have a customer using two sets of usb hard drives to back up. We will call them DATA & MAIL( there are 7 mail drives and 7 data drives that he rotates). He has assigned data to letter H and Mail to letter I:. Here is the problem. If the MAIL drive gets plugged in before the DATA drive it will claim letter H instead of I. Is there a way make ensure that the drives that are used for MAIL will always claim letter I: no matter what order it is plugged in? The 7 data drives are labeled DATA and the 7 mail drives are all labeled MAIL.

Thank you.

Which OS? If XP, it takes the next available letter and should then keep it until you tell it to use another letter through disk management. If you assign the drive letter through disk management each disk you assign the letter to should really keep it. If it doesn't, there may be something wrong with your installation.
If that is the case, first try SCF /scannow from a windows command prompt. Keep the original XP CD handy, as this will recover files from there. After having done that reapply the last SP and then rerun the windowsupdates from there on.

You can click start-run and type compmgmt.msc

    Then go into disk management

Right click on the drive you want to change letter for and click "change drive letter and path"

Then do same for second drive

Now they should each grab same drive letter when plugged in again.
