We use Microstrategy in some parts of the company and to be honest there's not much you can't do with SQL Server and SQL Server reporting services. Many users prefer the SQL server - faster reporting, easier to build reports. the web interface of Microstrategy is too complicated and if you want to get involved in advance reporting you'll need the Microstrategy desktop software version - major cost.

Again, if you're going to have one person building reports then you can go either way, if you have many users refreshing/building new reports you can easily do it thru ODBC with access and excel.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your comment. I think that advantage of Microstrategy are that it requires no addition hardware or software and personnel familiar with operation. Like you said, disadvantages of Microstrategy are no user customization, requires IT department to modify or add reports or queries.
Am I hitting the right target??

You could users can build reports on the web. when building complex reports then you'll want someone with more experience and with access to the Desktop version.

To be honest with you, there's nothing like trying the product...go here http://www.microstrategy.com/FreeEvalCD.asp for a free evaluation

Microstrategy is a wonderful tool for BI reporting against very large data warehouses (well over a terabyte). It provides easy customization and many flavors of reporting possibilites; including pixel perfect reporting (which sql server reporting services lacks).

However please know that people typically first make the choice that BI is needed and then decide on a tool.  To my knowledge Microstrategy is by far the most expensive application out there.  And requires a data warehouse with certain specifications (star schema, ROLAP based). So my suggestion is to first decide exactly what kind of reporting your after.  then pick the tool to meet those needs.
