DNS basics

After some time, I'm now nearly sure that I have to study the basics of DNSs again. Things like 'what happens if I add a record on my own DNS and refer it to one of my machine's IP' or 'what each of the DNS record types are for' etc.
I think, instead of asking each of these questions and giving answers (which is a waiste of your and my time indeed), I need some nice guy to take time and learn me the fishing, by directing me to web pages giving such basic issues.
Please advise
