Hi,

You can check whether this is not because of a recent Windows Update. This seems possible to me.

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165 for explanation and fix

Or do this (which is a quick way of doing what MS suggest):
Copy the following to the clipboard (it's all one line even if wrapped in your browser - paste into notepad and remove line breaks if necessary, and copy again)
Click Start, run
Paste into the dialogue box and hit return.

==Copy below here==
REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached" /v "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401" /t REG_DWORD /d 1

Greetings, fouchien !

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312351

To resolve this behavior, clear the Temp and Temporary Internet folders:
1.    In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.    On the General tab, click Delete Files, click OK, and then click OK again.
3.    In Windows Explorer, click to expand the hard disk letter, click to expand Windows, and then click to expand Temp.
4.    Select all of the files, and then on the File menu, click Delete.
5.    Click Yes.

Best wishes!

fouchien,

You may need to close Outlook Express.
Type Regsvr32 inetcomm.dll in the Run box and hit <Enter>
Then open OE again.
Do the same with the Temp folders.

tried all three of these.  none worked.   some of messages come back, then disappear again. have changed settings so that now nothing is supposed to be marked as read, but doesn't seem to matter.  would switch to outlook but all saved and sent messages have same problem.

fouchien,

1. A recent Outlook Express update, KB 911567, can cause the problem.  The only fix now is to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and disable Windows Autoupdate.

2. Register an important Outlook file. Go to Start > Run and type regsvr32 OLE32.DLL

3. Create a new Outlook Express identity.

4. Repair or Reinstall Outlook Express.
