Cannot configure XP home PC with network connected HP Colour jet 2600n

I have a mixed network at home. Four PC's and two Mac's. All connected via a Netgear 100meg switch and Netgear EN108's and EN104's. My internet is provided by a Zoom router and I have an Airport wireless access point and a Netgear Windows access point for use with a Laptop and a Apple Mac Book Pro. All the PC's run XP with auto update running from Microsoft. To solve my printing problems I recently opurchased a HP Colout Laserjet 2600n, with a network connection. All the Mac's and the PC's ran throught the setup no problem with the exception of my newest PC. When you run the setup programme and it scans the network for the printer in goes into an infinite loop and the programme has to be stopped. Even if I coose the "enter printer IP address" option the PC still cannot see the printer. The PC can however, access the internet via the router and access the server (which is a PC running XP pro) So I cannot understand why this one PC cannot see the new HP printer?

Try installing the printer as a local printer. Once it's installed, add the TCP/IP port. Just go to the ports tab, click New Port, type TCP/IP. Enter the IP address of the printer. Click "Custom" for the port type, and you should be good to go.

To install as a local printer, either connect it via USB if you can connect the printer temporarily to the computer or just use Add Printer Wizard and choose LPT1 for the port.

Also, one other thing to try is to ping the printer. Start/Run/Cmd, then type ping <ip address> to see if it responds.

I have managed to solve the problem. The cause was with Windows firewall. Althought the firewall was inactiviated it was still blocking access to the printer. When I configured the fire wall to see the printers IP address the printer installed OK and we are now using it perfectly. Despite this problem would strongly recommend the HP 2600n Colour Laser printer. For the price works well over the network with both Mac's and PC's.
