CDRW not recognized as recordable in Windows ME

Installed a new Sony CRX230EE CDRW drive on a Windows ME machine.
But the drive is not recognized by the OS as being recordable.
I have checked in Device Manager for correct installation.
I have also confirmed that there is no Recording tab under My Computer for the CD drive.
I can read CDs OK.
I am running Adaptec Easy CD.

I have tried finding suitable drivers on the SOny site and elsewhere, but without success.

I am assuming it is a driver problem. What/where can I find the right driver? Any other ideas?

Many thanks!!

Richard

Many people report CD Rom problems with Adaptec Easy CD. This usually involves the o/s not recognizing the drive, but your problem may also fall into this category.
There is a registry fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=270008

I have used this on XP machines, but not on ME.
Back up your registry and give it a shot.

Good luck!

You may want to try:

Uninstall Adaptec Easy CD and try a different software like Nero.

Update the firmware:

Instructions here:

Good luck,

Hi,

Phototropic - tried the registry stuff, but it doesn't apply to ME by the look of it. Registry key is different.

Zee - Didn't really want to buy new CD recording software. Could be throwing good money after bad. But I might try this if the firmware changes don't work. I'll give them a go now!

Thanks

OK. Tried the firmware upgrade, but it didn't work (the firmware installation was for the CRX230E, not the CRX230EE, and I couldn't find anything else on the Sony site). I suspect the OS or the application software rather than the firmware anyway.
I have asked the owner of the PC whether he is willing to pay for some new cd burner software like Roxio or Nero. Hopefully I can download a trial version to see if it works before paying for it!
I'll let you know.
Thanks for the help so far.

Richard,

Nero has trial versions:

http://www.nero.com/eng/Downloads.html

But I don't know if any is fully functional.

Try them...

OK. I downloaded a shareware CD burner: UsefulUtils CD&DVD Discs Studio (after un-installing the Easy CD software). And this appeared to do the trick. So then I downloaded the Roxio RecordNow (after paying for it), and guess what - it wasn't compatible with the CD drive! Aaagh. So I went back to the shareware.
Thanks for your help!

Richard,

Happy with the result, sorry for the Roxio RN flop.
