Different routing path for a specified IP address

Dear All,

I have a server with DIgital Unix V4.0 installed with IP 10.12.4.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.192, default gateway, 10.12.4.62.

If the traffic is from a specifced IP, let say 10.11.4.10, I would like to add a route like this

route add -host 10.11.4.10 255.255.255.255 10.12.4.125

I hope the gateway for the src IP 10.11.4.10 is 10.12.4.125 instead of 10.12.4.62.

But I found I can't add a route with the above command.

Please advise.

With a 26 bit subnet mask (255.255.255.192), the network range is 10.12.4.0 - 10.12.4.63.  If you are adding a route to 10.12.4.2, the gateway address must reside on the same network as the host, and 10.12.4.125 is on a different network.  That's why you can't add the route.

I'm unsure what you mean by this.  You should talk to whoever is managing your routers to find out this information.

Dear kfullarton

I have another subnet from 10.12.4.64 - 10.12.4.127

Is it possible for me to set the default gateway to be 10.12.4.125 in my case?

Please advise.

Dear kfullarton

One more question, if I add one more network card to my server & configure like this

card 1: IP 10.12.4.2 subnetmask 255.255.255.192 gateway 10.12.4.62

card 2: IP 10.12.4.65 subnet mask 255.255.255.192 gateway 10.12.4.125

Do u think I can add a route like this?

route add -host 10.11.4.10 255.255.255.255 10.12.4.125

Thanks for your advise.

No.  Not as long as your IP is in the 10.12.4.0/26 network

Sure, You should be able to add that route.  Just remember that the host 10.11.4.10 must know how to get back to you either through it's gateway or through a similar configuration using a static route.
