Delete IWAM and IUSR accounts from Active Directory

When I look in Active Directory I see a bunch of IWAM and ISUR accounts. I know these accounts are associated with IIS but i dont know if they need to be in AD. I am under the impression that IWAM and IUSR accounts are local accounts, in that case they can be deleted safely from Active Directory. So my question is: Why are these accounts in AD and can they be safely deleted?

-Thank you
