Adding Windows Server 2003 to Windows 2003 SBS

I have a client that has Windows 2003 SBS and he previously asked me about connecting another server to it at a later point to simply use as a developmental box for programming .  It was always my understanding that SBS was a standalone server and that you could not connect other servers to it, so I told him no.  Some months later he has now acquired a Windows 2003 box that he wants to attach to the network.  Do I have any options?  I suppose I could upgrade? this fancy Dell Poweredge 1800 into a Windows XP workstation as a client to the SBS.  Seems kind of senseless though.  I would appreciate the guidance.

    Accepted Solution

It is possible to add additional servers to a an SBS 2003 network.  You can add the server via the "Set up server computer" option in the SBS 2003 management console.

You may even add additional domain controllers to the SBS domain, however you cannot move the fsmo roles from the SBS server to the additionl domain controllers.

    Assisted Solution

As Saineolai says you can add servers to the SBS domain, but you are only licenced to use them as file and print servers for the number of cals that you have for SBS.
Use the mthod mentioned above and then run http://sbs/connectcomputer just as you do at present o connect client desktops.
To use this system for development, ie Website development you may be required to purchase different licences for your development programs.

Would the new server be accessed through the network just like any other workstation with shared resources?

Yes it will appear just the same, with a different servername.
