Uncompressing
I had this message on my computer "Do you want to compact/compress your email messages?" and answered YES.
I know that it hasn't deleted any of my emails as I can see them in a directory with an extension of .dbx
How do I pull those emails back up? Is there an uncompress in Outlook Express or any other tool to do that ?

Like I said in my question I can see all my folders in "c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data\
identifies\ \microsft\outlook express" and they all have an extension of DBX. All I want is to be able to umcompact a few of them back in their original folders

Now I understand what happened to your folder. Your folder did get compressed. What that mean is that empty spaces between the emails lie within the folder are removed.
But if you are missing some emails as a result of the compression, then some of the emails are corrupted. Then youi need to one of the programs below to recover the emails

The programs acts on the folder, ie inbox.dbx file. It extracts the mails one by one in the folder to .eml format. Then you can drag the emails back into Outlook Express.

I have tried using DBXtract and it fixed a few folder and extracted the emails but failed on the most important ones which are the Inbox & Sent folders. I have downloaded a few other sharewares to do the same job with no success.
Any other good ones that you know of ?? I desperately need to fix this Inbox and Sent folders

After some many attemepts I was able to recover a few useless folders with Outlook Express. It seems that the more important ones (Inbox, Sent etc ) were corrupted and unrecoverable. Murphy's Law !!

Sorry to hear about the loss.
Check your WinZip or zip program that you have. Maybe a setting got change to auto compress your emails.
If an email or folder got compressed, then you need to find which item got compress and in what format that it was compressed to (zip? rar? another format?)
Search for the compressed file or folder. Unhide hidden files and folders. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folder Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Click OK.
