Single beep ids memory issue

I have a problem with my machine.  I was getting sporatic memory type issues and decided to swap out the memory.  As I did, the first memory board seemed to fry.  So thankfully I have a replacement.  When I purchased the new memory, I took the old with me - so I think I purchased the correct one.

The mother board manual identifies that I "have 3 slots for 184-pin, 2.5V DDR DIMM with 6 memory banks.  You can install PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM modules on the DDR DIMM slots (DDR 1-3)

When I install the new memory 512MB UNB PC400 in slot 1, the machine does not boot.  If I intall it to the second slot, the machine boots to XP, but then suddenly will reboot itself.

First, did I purchase the correct memory?  Chip id Samsung 548  K4H560838E-TCCC - 512MB UNB PC400.

If yes, then why doesn't the first slot see the memory.  I have reseated it numerous times to ensure a 'true' fit.

Thanks in advance.

hi,
if your motherboard states:
>>The mother board manual identifies that I "have 3 slots for 184-pin, 2.5V DDR DIMM with 6 memory banks.  You can install PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM modules on the DDR DIMM slots (DDR 1-3)
<<
then it should be you need a BIOS update to run PC400(actually DDR400) RAMs or you need just a new Motherboard that you can put PC400 RAM modules on;
RAM400 means that the modules run on FSB 400 MHz ,and actually the right type of these Modules is PC3200,which are quite new for your current motherboard:

please give us your motherboard's make and model.

This machine is  bit old - the mobo is a MSI 645 Ultra(AMI bios, Video NBIDIA Gforce 2MX 100/200, Intel Pent 4 1713MHz).  Not sure if I have given all you need.

It is my understanding that if I flash the bios incorrectly, the machine is kaput.  True?

Okay I won't update the bios until we figure out the issue.  Thanks.

Forgot to tell you that the mobo is version 1 - if that helps.

did you check if your ram is compatible?

The Kingston site does not have info on the ver 1 mobo and memory - they have Ultra-C or ver2.  Crucial.com identfied the following.

Manufacturer Model Part Number Size Specifications Price (ea.)
MSI (Micro Star)   MS-6547 (645 Ultra)  CT3264Z335   256MB  DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 32Meg x 64  Check pricing
MSI (Micro Star)   MS-6547 (645 Ultra)  CT6464Z40B   512MB  DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 64Meg x 64  Check pricing
MSI (Micro Star)   MS-6547 V2.0 (645 Ultra-C)  CT6464Z40B   512MB  DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 64Meg x 64  Check pricing
MSI (Micro Star)   MS-6547 (645 Ultra)  BL6464Z402   512MB  DDR PC3200 • 2-2-2-6 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.8V • 64Meg x 64  Check pricing
MSI (Micro Star)   MS-6547 V2.0 (645 Ultra-C)  CT3264Z40B   256MB  DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 32Meg x 64  Check pricing

based on the above - I think I do have the wrong memory.  Am I correct?

" 512MB UNB PC400 - Chip id Samsung 548  K4H560838E-TCCC - 512MB UNB PC400"

i would agree it is wrong; maybe you can check that on the samsung site too, to be sure ?

I was feeling rich so I purchased 512MB PC3200 CL3 184 DIMM Kingston.  Wow it works.  First slot still not working but if I seat into the second, boots and stays alive.  Could the first slot have been 'blown' from the orginal memory going bad?

Thanks for hand-holding me through this - nobus.

Now onto the next problem, but is not part of this forum.

Cheers
