SQL User Function?

From VB 2005, How can I run a user defined function on SQL Server and get a return value?

Back in the day, one would do:

SELECT dbo.udfMyUDF -- If the UFD returns a value
SELECT * FROM dbo.udfMyUDF -- If the UDF returned a table

But I've never used UDF's in 2005
