Multiple email copies and attachments

When multiple recipients receive the same email with attachments. Does that email and attachments get copied for each recipient? Or is there only one instance of that email and the attachment? We are using Exchange Server 2003.

Yes, the recipients are members of multiple distribution lists.
and Yes, sometimes emails are sent to DL's.

If serveral email recipients receive emails from the outside world, how many copies of that email will we have on our Exchange server?

Thanks,
Jim

Depends if the message is internal or external.

If the message is internal, then Exchange has a system known as Single Instance Storage. This means that only one copy of the attachment is stored in the database. The attachment isn't removed until the last person has deleted the message.
Therefore you could send a 10mb attachments to 100 people internally and the message will only take up 10mb in the store.

If the message is external, then SIS doesn't apply. The message will treated as separate items, and each user will have their own copy in the store.

Simon.
