Mail Merge Using Adobe Product(s)

I have a document that was created in Adobe Illustrator CS2 and saved as a PDF file.
I have Illustrator installed on my system and I can edit the document.

Here is my question:  I want to do a mail merge (like in Microsoft Word) with either adobe illustrator OR Adobe 7 full version (I have both).   I have a .csv file that I will be using as my data source to input each individual recipient.  This will be a large merge of around 3,000 US mail recipients.
How can I accomplish this?

You cannot.  Mail merge is ONLY a concept of WORDSTAR 3.

Defective interface, sumitted before I finished typing, please let me continue --

You cannot.  Mail merge is ONLY a concept of WORDSTAR 3.1.  They (i.e. wordstar) designed the mail merge interface, and microsoft word and all other copy artists cloned the idea (especially wordperfect) and tried to claim it as their own, but they are liars and frauds.  The idea of mail merge was desigend by Wordstar for DOS in 1996.

So you see that mail merge is for a WORD-PROCESSOR and file input only, it is NOT for graphics programs.

No if you want to work AROUND the limitations of graphics programs, here is how you do it.  The graphic program create a graphic file, and you need to save this as either .JPG, .BMP. GIF, or some standard graphic file that a word processor can handle.  Now you open a WP, like word (im)perfect, or MS word, or better still the new open Office 2.0 and you create a mail-merge document, you will see it in the menus.  Then you import the graphics that you did in PS or Ill. into the document, then you create the merge variables, and then you can send it.  The means to create the merge variables and all you need are explained in each programs HELP interface, they are all steals off the orginal Wordstar specs of 1996, and they all do it slightly different, you have to check your program for how it has adapted the original Wordstar specs.  Once your file has the right "merge variables" (usually an &name, & address) labels, and the graphics file has been imported INTO the word processor program, then you can merge-send.

Sorry for the 4 posts, last one should read .. NOW, if you want to work around ....

So the conclusion is, YES, you do it using a modern windows word processor.  You use the graphics program to save the graphics file in a format the WP can read, then you IMPORT that file into the wordprocessor document, using a mail-merge format, and then you create your mailing list as the windows word-processor wants, and you sent it !!!

So to simplify, you cannot do this from Adobe CS.  You need to use a wordprocessor as the "merge" program, and use Adobe CS as the means to create the graphic file, in a format your word-processor can understand (maybe .BMP or .JPG, which is smaller and easier to send), and it is the word processor, using wordstar technology, that does the mail merge for you.  Adobe products cannot do it.

I understand completely with one exception.
I want to put my merge fields right on top of the image file in MS Word.  How do I do that?
