If you want to wipe the whole drive you can do this from ubuntu first:

WARNING!!! THIS WILL ERASE YOUR WHOLE HARD DRIVE!!!
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512

then reboot and put the Windows XP CD in and follow the installation instructions.

fdisk in windows won't like the linux partition and probably won't let you delete it, so the above command with completely wipe the bootsector and the partition table

Here's another tutorial I wrote long ago on restoring the WinXP boot sector - that would leave XP and uBuntu on your machine but only Windows would be accessible http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:bAsP0w2PUscJ:www.hardwaretechnet.com/bootloader.shtml+hardwaretechnet+boot&hl=en

you need to be in Linux to do it so either boot into ubuntu or boot from a linux install CD and press CRTL-F5 when you get to the setup - that should kick you to a shell where you can destroy the boot sector

kamermansCommented:
Or you can go into the XP recovery console and type 'fixmbr' and 'fixboot' - that might replace the bootsector, but it won't get rid of ubuntu, you just won't see it when you boot

xp setup tells me there are two os's on the disk even after formatting so i know its there
but.............there is no trace of it when i search xp for ubuntu
?

kamermansCommented:
I know.  You need to erase the partition table, so you need to do the Linux command.  Searching for ubuntu definately won't work because it's on a different partition.  XP knows there is another OS but it can't tell what it is.  You could also use a third party partitioning tool like Partition Magic 8 to delete the Linux partition.

after all that i need to go thru to wak this thing
i have to say that linux and ubuntu are hyped to the hilt
xp is just as good if not better
look at the support of linux i have been at this for DAZE with all kinds of nonsense.....................like fdisk etc
which all dont work
plus add programs and peripherals that dont support it
it should be called how to waste your time if you have nothing better to do
......................DOES LINUX TELL ANYBODY THIS WHEN THEY DOWNLOAD THIS
JOKE?.............NO!    so once you download it you basically are welded to it unless i spend 80 bucks for a program to wak it.
does any linux gearhead really think that linux is above microsoft when it comes to DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP?........cheapshots et al
know what i mean
anybody having similar proprietary issues with this?
i smell class action......................comin upppppppppppp.
if one cant afford the hundred bucks for an os then you cant afford a computer.
UGH!
anyway just venting..............not your fault
but this os is really a joke

LOL!  Both OS's have their uses - talking that much trash in the Linux TA will probably get your @$$ hacked!  Anyway - you want an easy to use client machine - Enter XP.  I want a scaleable multitasking database server that I can cluster without paying a fortune that's more stable than Windows 2003 Ent. Server.  We both get what we want.  Good luck to you!

steve,

TELL LINUX HEADS TO BRING IT!
I WILL CUT THEM A NEW ONE!
the reason i vented is because linux fans think that microsoft infringes on their rights
with their proprietary business practices and the fact they make you actually pay for something they make.
go figure!
so they howl that linux is their salvation and they are now free...........literally and figuratively!
this company is no more less ruthless than any other business enterprise engaged in a very competitive field.
BRING IT LINUX HEADS...................
just tell me how to wak this piece of trash without having to buy partition magic
interesting isnt it how they wrote unbutu .........you can download onto ntfs ........but you cant wak it because its a different file format
BRING IT.

The problem is that Windows doesn't know about anything but itself!  I can 'wak' Linux, MAC, BSD, Solaris, Windows, PA-RISC, etc... all from linux - windows can only wak windows

petey301Author Commented:
what if i download ubuntu again
is there a way to wak it then?

kamermansCommented:
not really - it's like installing Windows 2000 and Windows XP and then simply "deleting" one of them.  You still have a bunch of junk left behind.

This is not difficult. I presume you are currently dual boot and that Ubuntu has installed Grub as the bootloader.

Boot into XP.
Go to Disc Management (right click my computer, manage, disc management).
Delete all your linux partitions (usually shown as 'unknown' and will not have a drive letter assigned unless you run linux on FAT)
Shutdown
Boot up with XP CD
Select Repair Console
Enter Administrator password
Run these 3 commands: fixboot, fixmbr, quit.
You are now done.

If your install is not that cut and dried, I would suggest either using the dd method as mentioned above, or boot up off a Knoppix CD and using Qtparted (Windows guys just love their GUIs) to nuke the whole drive.

PS. Chill dude.

fdisk
wak the mother
.............nuclear pro liberation.
finally
can i assign points to myself?

pjedmondCommented:
I doubt you can assign the points to yourself as there are at least 3 solutions that will work here and on your other question relating to this (provided you followed ...and understood the instructions). The solution you came up with was highlighted by me at 10:35am, Kamermans cam up with a workable solution at 03:41am, Merete gave you a link which includes that solution at 04:03am.

Calm down, and stop insulting the work of dedicated people that provide you with freedom of choice. Linux does require greater knowledge to get the best out of it. Some people never have the time or effort to develop that knowledge, and for them, they can stick with windows. The linux community always does its best to help people learn, and assist people having problems. In your case, you're probably better off with Windows.

All the best.

Been looking through your posts on this and the other question, and it actually appears that the 2 operating systems may be nothing to do with ubuntu - You've actually got halfway though installing a second copy of Windows XP on the same partition.....Once you'd done that, it wouldn't let you continue..... Nice to see that ubuntu helped you sort out your XP problem:)

petey301Author Commented:
no
you can continue
but you will still have two os on one partition and it will work
the problem was fdisk and sata
windows 98 bootdisk wont work on xp
for obvious reasons
the fix
load ubuntu from cd
look for sata drive
fdisk
wak  ubuntu mbr
format xp
etc.

petey301Author Commented:
no the fixes dont work
because of SATA
