Aim: To be able to play Redalert on my home network with two (may be three) computers.

Problem:  When I go into redalert >> network multiplayer option on both of the computers. From each computer, I cannot see the other computer!

Question:  How can I get the computers to see each other through the game?

Steps taken so far:

I have set installed Redalert (yes old but gold) in windows XP on both computers using the compatibility option for Windows 95 (under properties of the setup file) .

I have also done the same for the RA.exe file so it runs under compatibility for Windows 95.  The game runs fine on both computers under XP.

I have installed IPX/SPN under (My network places > properties) and setup the network option to 802.2 and network address (just below 802.2) to 00000001 on the first computer and 00000002 to second computer.

Many thanks in advance guys

Hi getfahad,

First of all, with IPX/SPX both computers need to be on the same network. Just set both network addresses to 00000001.
On top of that, maybe some firewall is blocking the connection so disable any you have to test with.

Greetings,

You may be out of luck here, when C&C was made XP "compatible" one of the library files that got modified (thipx32.dll) affected ipx connectivity - result LAN multiplayer was disabled.  I'm not aware this was ever fixed but will hunt around.  Otherwise your only other option would be a FAT32 partition for gaming and dual-booting into an earlier windows version.  I'm also pretty certain that DOSBox won't handle the networking either.

Ok we have SOME success:

Now I can see PC2 from PC1

but I cannot see PC1 from PC2

when I am in the lobby area of the game.

Though any msgs I send (from both PCs) in the lobby area does not get shown on both PCs.  How do I get PC1 to show in PC2 and also exchange msgs etc???

I have disabled windows xp firewall on both computers
Also have disabled Panda security softwaron PC2  and Norton security centre on PC1 .

Also MASQUERAID, the patch I have installed is 3.03E which I believe does not disable LAN play.

Sorry to have broken my info .. another pieace of ino which may be useful:

When in the Lobby, the msgs sent from PC1 get shown TWICE on its own screen but PC1 only shows the msgs (like its suppose to) on its own screen.

Thanks

getfahad,

Although I don't have Red Alert installed at the moment so I can't check it. It could perfectly be that MASQUERAID is right and you'll have to install a patch to make it WinXP compatible (I'm running all my workstations on Windows 2000) but that the same patch breaks the LAN connectivity. I'll search around if I can find a workaround for you.

Good news! Can you confirm that you've got it running now?  If so please post a link to the file you needed and this can be archived for other RA players.

BTW you should get the duplicate question @ http:Q_21836060.html deleted by Community Support as the most you can offer in the way of points for any question is 500 in total, posting two identical questions is likely to dilute the response you get (and you'll see that both LucF and KA produced identical responses).  It is often better to post one main question in the thread that seems most appropriate and then put 20 point "pointer questions" in related threads which basically say "I've a problem with XXXXX if you think you can help the main question is here:" and give the URL of the main question.  Experts won't post in the pointer questions and you can delete them once you've got a solution.

Again well done with solving this one, I'm delighted to be proved wrong!
