total drive capacity in your system has decreased
i get this on several dell desktops just purchased. any suggestions?
Either you got a batch of hard disks which developed bad sectors all of a sudden, or you have something in those locations damaging the hard drives (bad power, perhaps, or excess vibration?). Do you know how much disk space you have lost?

i havent lost any space and this error message appears on both dell workstations.
If you actually haven't lost any space, it sounds like an erroneous warning. Do these messages appear every time the machines boot up?
ASKER
yes, this comment happens everytime during bootup. also, i have experienced this dialog box on several dell workstations with the same config (2 drive mirror RAID). I am on the phone with dell support and they have never seen the error. I have seen this exact error on Dell Percision workstations, Dell XPS workstations, and a few others running mirrored drives.
It seems quite a few other Dell customers are seeing this: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=pw_harddrive&message.id=1317
Some suggestions are to remove the Open Manage software (if it is installed); another is that it might be caused by connecting an external USB drive while the system is off. Dell should definitely address this if it is happening so much.

Turns out, this error message is generated by Dells OMCI (Dell OpenManage™ Client Instrumentation) which, apparently, is a useful tool for IT people to see failling drive arrays on client machines throughout the network. Dell's suggestion was to either uninstall it or update it. Bah. Lousy Dell add-on software. :)

Problem solved. (by me!) do I get the points?
Hmm...I thought I suggested that you "remove the Open Manage software (if it is installed)", so didn't I have the solution? If so, why a C grade?
ASKER
you did. i already had a solution though.
for an A grade, I would expect more in the answer. wouldnt you?
besides, you got the points!!!!!!
thanks again,
