Hoyle Majestic Chess - Shows "Tie" or "Draw"

I have Hoyle Majestic Chess 2005.

It is difficult to beat even on the "easy" setting. At least 4 times I have had 2 queens plus other pieces and cornered the King. My last next move will result in checkmate and the friggin game ends that game with "Tie" or "Draw"

Have I hit a maximum number of moves? When I'm in trouble the game will chase my king endlessly until I'm caught but if the tables are turned the game gives me the finger. Any ideas why it would do this?

Thanks,

As the computer is so heavily outnumbered is there any chance it has forced a stalemate?

If it is a stalemate issue it seems you can adjust the game's settings so that you can specifically "dumb down" its ability to force a draw.

Thanks, what exactly defines a stalemate in chess. I would think it means that the game could just go on forever without possibility of one side winning. In the above case, I would clearly win. Am I wrong on understanding what "stalemate" means? Thanks, -P

It is a way of forcing a draw, often when hopelessly outnumbered.

P: the official definition of a Draw in today's chess rules is both parties consent to Draw. The rule that most chess programs follow nowadays is if there are 3 consecutive moves repeated(3 moves for each color) it is a stalemate. That is also the official ruling in U.S. chess rules. After a move is repeated 3 times, either party can declare a stalemate, or both parties can agree to keep playing. However, in your game it sounds like a bug. I'd definitely talk to Hoyle about it. There's most likely a patch for it.

Sorry to get back so late and thanks for the responses. What do you like for a computer chess game with a nice 3D board? Thanks again, -Paresh
