Fail to access share in DC

Hi,
I  have 2 Win2k3 Domain Controller.Let say
server1.mydomain.com 192.168.0.1 with global cateory and DNS
server2.mydomain.com 192.168.0.2

Now,in sometime client cannot access the share in server1.Shows "cannot found the server path".
At the failre time, when i ping mydomain.com from server1,the domain name cannot be soloved.
Althought reboot can solove the problem.
But after reboot, when i ping mydomain.com from server1,it resolove the name to 192.168.0.2,
ping mydomain.com from server2,it resolove the name to 192.168.0.1

The domain name was resoloved to 2 different result in 2server.I'm no sure is that caused the client cannot access the share in server1.

Any suggestion?

Regards,

Hi Silmeria,

check your dns entries and make sure there is no rogue entries for the server with a wrong IP

Hi Jay,
I can't find any entry about mydomain.com in DNS.
I checked the entry of server1.mydomain.com and server2.mydomain.com in dns. Both records are correct.

Or,should i reinstall the dns service? What should i prepare to build the dns?

p.s. the win2k3 server was upgraded from Winnt 4.0 server.

run an ipconfig /flushdns on all machines

ipconfig /registerdns on the servers

The server1.mydomain.com is my primary DC that host the global category and dns.
But it's upgrade from winnt. The microsoft product always contains many potential issue from a upgrade OS...
And server2.mydomain.com is a pure installation.
If i willing to move the primary DC from server1 to server2.Can i just demote the server1
and install the dns service on server2.Than flush dns on all machines?

Jay_Jay70Commented:
you can do that if you like

i would keep a second DC though, maybe wipe your old one that was upgraded and start again, do you know how to transfer roles?

Thanks for your article.I'd read it.
That means i need to transfter the FSMO roles from server1 to server2,than demote server1.
Afterward, config the dns service on server2 and flush dns on all machine to complete the transfter process.Anything else?

Jay_Jay70Commented:
nope thats it, demote the server and then repromote,

i dont know why you want to take these steps though, flushing the dns as is hould do th trick - you dont really need to demote the server but its your call

??? So derver 1 resolved the domain name to server 1 and Server 1 resolves it to server2

Thats completely normal?? Im willing to be both servers are pointing to the other server for their DNS

is the start > run > cmd {enter}
ipconfig /all {enter}

on bth servers giving you the SAME DNS address?
even if not the "round robin" feature of DNS would return alterate ip addresses for the domain

Jay_Jay70Commented:
always wondered about that round robin feature and never bothered to read :)

You means ipconfig /registerdns on the server?
I havn't try to do it yet.But i'd reboot the server when it failure. Is reboot server equal to ipconfig /registerdns?
If no,i will registerdns on the server and monitor it a week more to decide what next action should be toke.

Jay_Jay70Commented:
ipconfig /registers dns - its not the same as rebooting

did you have a check on Pete's Answer above?

SilmeriaAuthor Commented:
Oops!!I'd enable the round robin on DNS. I totally forgot this function.
Thanks peter.

Sorry for my late reply as i'm testing the server these few weeks.
I found out that the fault should caused by Northen Quota Server. After removed it for 3weeks,the server still alive~
Anyway, thanks both the comment from Jay and Pete.
