What is the proper way to connect the router to my server so I can enable the remote email and web access with two NICs

Should the router only have a single connection to the server and then use all the switchs and hubs off hte server...  Is there a default NIC or can I just set one for TCP/IP and the other for everything else?  I jsut set up my internet connection and it was warning me about firewall issues but I have a good router yet if its better then we should go that route.  I'm going to exchange my new NIC for a dual port NIC because the integrated seems on the slow side
