Mailboxes not backing up with Veritas

I have several deactivated users in my AD (running W2k server) - therefore their exchange (2k) mailboxes are deactivated as well.  My problem is that when I go to backup my mailboxes using the exchange add in with veritas it continues to give me an error:  

Directory not found. Can not backup directory Name of user and its subdirectories.

I cannot purge the mailboxes yet - any ideas to get this to backup?  other than reactivating the accounts of course.
