PVST MIST can they co-exist in a network

We have a couple 3550's that can't support more than 128 instances of stp. We thought about putting the switches in transparent mode and entering only the vlan's we need. Could we configure the 3550's with MIST, and have the rest of the network switches doing PVST+?

On a side bar, how many instances of stp do the 3750, 4500 and 6500 switches support?

Gracias, happy cinco de mayo

They can co-exist, but you should try to have all of your MIST switches interconnected together, all of your PVST+ switches interconnected together, and distinct connections between the two clouds.  Intermingling the two types could cause all sorts of funnies.

Can't answer your sidebar well, except to say that 6500 series would be supervisor and software mode specific.

Agree with pjtemplin... try and keep the MIST and PVST regions contigous. Otherwise it can make for a VERY confusing mental excerise when trying to firgure out the spanning tree topology

3750 supports 128 instances of spanning-tree
4500 Sup II supports 1500 - 3000 instances
6500 Sup's: A bunch!

Some 6500 Sups are 64 or 128...be careful.
