How do you boot an HP G3 server into safe mode?

Trying to start in safe mode to remove a malicious file.

Help menu says hit F8.

We have tried hitting F8 intermittantly during boot up, and also holding down F8 during boot up.  In both instances we get a blue screen labeled:

Configuration options:
Create logical drive
Delete Logical drive
View logical drive

Thanks for any suggestions.

You have to wait until the POST is done.  You're getting it when the RAID controller hooks F8.  Right after the F10 screen, after everything is initiallized you'll see a quick blank screen - you gotta be fast.

Hold down the shift key from the time you power it on and then during the entire boot sequence and it should go into Safe Mode.

Sorry for the delay... will be at the site this week to give that a go.

Managed to find a way to remove the file without going into safe mode... do don't  know if these suggestions would work.  In any case, I appreciate the replies and am splitting the points.
