operation failed

Winxp/outlook 2002.

I recently tried to install a friend's office 2003 and when I discovered I couldn't install it on another machine, I immediately removed the program and reinstalled my 2002 version.  Ever since, I get 'operation failed' every time I try press send/receive.  I can receive mail through tools menu, but outgoing mail with attachments will not leave the outbox--I say that b'c I successfully sent a msg without an attch via tools menu prior to setting up 2 more for mailing but with attachments...they will not work.

I've followed the advice of almost every article I've read, including several on EE.  I've changed, deleted and created new profiles.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled office and outlook.  I tried scanpst from the common files folder.  SO, I'm now soliciting help from the EE techies.  Thanks in advance if you can help.

Greetings, twain92262 !

Do not run Outlook 2002 with MS Office 2003.  The programs will be inconpatible.

Uninstall Outlook 2003.  Remove the remaining bits of Outlook 2003 and 2002 with Windows Installer cleanup utility
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301

Then install Outlook 2002.

Best wishes!

This is from the readme file from that uninstall utility:  "If you remove the settings for a program that is currently installed on your computer, the program will no longer be able to add or remove components or to repair itself; to prevent problems, it is recommended that you reinstall your programs before you use them."

Ok, so I uninstalled 2003 a long time ago, but just now, I uninstalled office2002 before running the utility...of course office does not appear in the utility's list of programs eligible for cleanup.  From what I understand of the readme file text, if I run the utility while office is on my pc, I'll not be able to remove or repair office.  So, my question is this:  what now?

Do I install office and THEN run the cleanup utility?

I'm now confused.  Thanks for the link, by the way.

HB, if you cannot get Outlook 2002 to work any other way, yes, uninstall Office 2002.  Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and then reinstall Office.

Look at the screenshot of the outlook express folder, which I assume is a relic of the office pro 2003 I attempted to install...I cannot delete the folder or its contents (and I am an administrator).  Why is this not showing up in the cleanup utility?

War1,

I've uninstalled both office standard 2002 and office pro 2003 (2003 weeks ago)...installed and uninstalled office 2002 a number of times, but right now it's not on the machine.  When I run the utility, it lists every program on my machine except for MS office, even with the outlook express folder on my machine.  How can I clean it up when it's not an option?

Twain92262,

If MS Office is not in the cleanup utility, then it is removed.  Go ahead and install MS Office. Make sure antivirus and antispyware and other active scan programs are turned off.

twain92262,

1. Register an important send/receive library file.  Go to Start > Run and type regsvr32 inetcomm.dll

2. Check if antivirus email check is slowing sending and receiving.  Disable it.

3. In the account settings, Advanced settings, change the server timeout time from 1 min to 5 min

4. Check if outgoing mail server authentication is required. Select that option in account settings and use same settings as incoming server

5. Your ISP may be blocking port 25. Try using alternate port 587.

6.  Check with email provider Tech Support to determine if server is having trouble.

7. See this troubleshooter for not sending

Ok, I fixed this problem by deleting ALL of my profiles and creating a new one...then imported an older pst file that was created prior to my failed attempt to install office 2003.  You earned the points.  Thanks war!
