what purpose does the auth.log file serve in the linux system?

Hello.  I am a newbie to the Linux world and I am anxious to see what all the hype is about in Linux.  I was just wondering what was the significance of the auth.log file in the Linux system? (I'm using Debian distro..just an fyi)

    This is the log where all the authentication related activities are logged. e.g. which user logged in from which machine at what time etc. etc.
