Hello.  I am new to the Linux World.  What are the most basic steps taken to securing a multi-user Debian System on a Local Area Network?

    apt-get update
    apt-get upgrade

    Or with more body (elaborated for you...)
    As root run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade on a daily basis! (as previously stated by ravenpl).
