asked on

backing up XP and Outlook 2003

Does the Windows Backup utility backup not only data files but Outlook 2003 fioles such as address book, emails in Inbox, persnal folders, etc. and is it farily easy to restore or should i consider a third party?  I have used Outback in the past and it works fine, but not sure I want to upgrade.

Thanks.

Hi there texastwostep,

It will depend on what you have asked the backup utility to backup.  In general your emails, contacts, calendar etc are stored in a .PST file which is held in : C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook (you will need to show hidden files to get to this folder.) make your you back up all files in here as you may have an Archive.PST which you will need for a complete backup.

The names which popup when start typing into the TO: when you create an email are store in a .NK2 file in: C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Backing up these files will ensure you don't lose any information although this backup will not cover stored accounts and passwords - you will have to recreate those so make sure you know the server details and passwords!

But to answer your question it entirely depends on what you have asked ntbackup to backup for you.

Glad to see u make it.

& thanks 4 the points.
