Check JRE , Browser and OS

I am launching an Applet from my JSP page ..but the applet works only in certain browsers ,JRE and  OS .

Is there a way of checking the user OS ,JRE and the browser ?

    OS detect:
       in javascript:

       in applet // not sure if you could be able to get these from within JSP
                    // also be the applet should be signed for this purpose
