Though... apparently it is not good enough that 8 works they want the 9 key to be disabled so that noone can accidently dial 911. ARGHH!!!! I love bosses!!! Ok... enough of a rant sorry to tag this on at the end or should i start a new question? But how do i keep people from dialing 911?

Ok i got them to conceed that 911 has to stay but they just dont want 9 to work for dialing out any more to prevent accidents because they all already figured out that 9 still works so of course thats what they use its just a matter of time before they make the mistake again and it will come out of my hide. Should i post my dial plan?

Also we have fax machines that run on the system that will not dial out with 8 with the current setup.

Sorry - I saw your response earlier but have been swamped with a deadline today. I appreciate the kind words earlier! Disabling 9 is pretty easy. It would be preferable to get your dial plan to do it. If you can post it I wouldn't mind modifying it for you.

Have you imported dial plans before? It does stop call processing for a few moments FYI. Generally a good idea to do either after hours or during lunch etc.

Also - could you clarify the fax machines? Generally either 1-the fax user dials a 9 for an outside line, or 2-the fax machines are configured to dial 9 (or 8) for outside line on all faxes, or 3-a custom table is added to the dial plan such that there is no 8 or 9 required for the fax machines. Are the fax (ATA) extensions in a seperate range than other devices?

Here is the dial plan in its entirety. You have no idea how much i appreciate the help And yep i have imported dial plans before i always keep a most recent backup and everything. The Fax machine is setup to connect through a phone cable to a analog converter... box thing (since i dont know much about it). Maybe that card needs to be specificly configured, but i am not sure. When we dial out with the fax machine we still hit 9 then the number just like before. Thank you so much for your help, rest assured it will not soon be forgotten.

Okay - here you go. There are a couple of different ways of doing this. I elected to make anything beginning with a 9, except 911 and 9911, NotAllowed. This way the dial plan entries are preserved so if you want to re-enable 9 you can change the entries again. Whenever anyone dials 9 and a number they will get a fast busy on Not Allowed will display on their LCD display. Users will still be able to dial 911 and 9,911. When you cut and paste this text back you may want to make sure no extra spaces were added.

Also - for the fax machine - easiest thing is to just have users dial 8 and then their number. Depending on the fax machine you may be able to set it up to always dial the 8 for the user.

Also - I'm sure you will but don't forget to save your existing dial plan before importing this one! Looks like you have a pretty diverse business with all the timed routes etc! That dial plan was fun for someone initially I'm sure!

Thank you very much, you are truly a gentleman and a scholar. I cant try it out till they all leave because it would mess with the phones, might have to do it later tonight or maybe everyone will clear out soon. I will let you know, thanks for your help and yeah... it looks like it was a royal pain in the rear for whoever set it up. Also yeah they all know about the dialing 8 on the fax machine it shouldnt matter that it goes through that nalog box thing should it, it should be granted the same dial out permissions as the phones, because i know that they did try it and it was unable to connect... i better try it... i dont trust their results!!!

Ok... issues... users... you have to love them they ALWAYS find something to complain about. Well their complaint is that now they have to dial long distance for everything, even local numbers that they didnt used to have to dial. Have any ideas?

Argh! My apologies. I see now where local calls were being sent to route 10 and 1920 is being pre-pended to it. Didn't even think to look for something like that. I assume either your location requires 10 digit dialing and they didn't want to dial the area code or your providor requires 10 digit.

Either way there is 1 digit that needs to be added to the dial plan to fix it. This line in table 1:

Needs to be changed to:

This will make local calls go to route 10 which will automajically prepend the area code.

If you would like to just change it in the dial plan you have and re-import that would work fine. Or you can also do it "live" in the dial plan if you feel comfortable doing it by going to the DialPlan page in NetSet and selecting modify. I can also make the change and re-post the entire text if you would like. My apologies!

Awesome job, cant tell you how much i appreciate it. You certainly know dial plans!!! Works just fine guess i have to wait for what the users say. Now my boss is talking about dropping the phone system all together and getting http://www.broadvoice.com/ and installing wireless hot spots so that... yeah... i dont know anymore. i dont think it would be possible to get the current functionality with that as this has. What a crazy world ehh...

Ok man here we are again... im sorry to keep posting on this quesiton. They say when they fax the people are only getting 1/2 the document i cant figure out what could cause that every singe fax i have sent through to multiple numbers has not had a problem. Is there something with the fax machine that it is not sendign could this be anything with the dial plan. They are screaming and threatening to hit me over here... i dont know what could cause it. every single test page i have sent has gone through. Can you think of anything?

Here is the dial plan i had to make some changes... supid i know but our security stystem had to still be able to dial those 2 numbers with a 9. Could that have broken it. Everythign worked before do you have any ideas for testing if it is a fax problem or a line problem i dont know anymore... i cant take the yelling.

The dial plan change should not have had any impact on outgoing fax reliability. If they dial the number, digits are outpulsed, and there is a connection, the dial plan is not a factor anymore. Has anything else changed? Only thing I can think right off is that you have analog lines in addition to the T1/PRI and faxes go out analog more reliably than digital.

It should be 12 and 12 for min/max digits. That way the dial plan will wait to see if it to one of these exact numbers before allowing it. The way it is now only looking at the first 3 digits - anyone would be able to again dial 91800xxx-xxxx. This is what those lines should look like:

Did you test the changes you made above? These calls are being sent to route 2 (local CO no strip) which means it does not remove the leading 9. But yet your classifying the number with the leading 9. Only time I have ever seen this is if you have Centrex type analog lines that require you to dial 9.

On the fax issue: you say every fax sent by you seems fine. Are they trying multiple different fax numbers from different machines? Is there anything similar about all the faxes they are sending? (like same exchange, area code etc.)

Do you have analog lines in addition to the T1/PRI? This is where things like this get tricky not having access to NetSet. Are the analog lines in the 8 pool?

Yes i tested them and faxed successfully after the changes were made. My boss just desperatly needed the security system to work. I tried faxign to my dad who has an ohio fax number as well as internal numbers and everything. Thank you for fixing up the dial plan, most appreciated. We do not have any analog lines what so ever. I think i can fax with the other fax machines we will see. Maybe it is a fax machine issue. I would give you access to the net set however... i am not willing to post the user name and password here. I don't think there is a need really (for me to login). If you have faxed test faxes with no problem and have no analog lines I am 100% sure dial plan changes had absolutely no impact on faxing. It also seems that there is no fax issue being caused by the NBX.

Thanks for the good luck... it looks like the stupid security system was plugged into a splitter then into the fax machine. The fax machine dials out, then it connects and shows the name of the other fax machine, then it gets disconnected and doesnt send sheets. The error message on the fax machine is "Hang up or line fail" I unplugged the adapter that splits the line so that the fax and the security system can dial out and plugged the fax machine straight into the analog box to make sure the adapter was not bad. Again im really sorry for asking all this of you, but i really do appreciate the help, i just dont know anymore people go absalutly insane when they cant fax!!! Maybe i will try some more numbers for kicks and see what i get.

I have followed these instructions and they work great, however after the change. When we try to redial, only 7 digits show up. So it doesn't really redial the #. It used to work fine prior to this change over.
