how to find what version of linux a server is running

how to find what version of linux a server is running,  I can only access the server thru SSH and I can't figure out what is the version of the operating system.  I guess I could go by the Colo- but I want to be able to learn unix commands.  Maybe I'm asking too many questions  lol   but I just want to learn

thanks for the tips

if nmap is installed, you can use it to determine the OS; "nmap -O <servername>".  If not, running "uname -a" will provide the kernel version and "cat /etc/redhat-release" on redhat systems will provide the name of the release.

BTW, this is the wrong TA for this question.  Should be posted under Linux or Linux Administration.
