I would bet this progress bar is implemeted using JavaScript. Check the pages and see if I'm right. If yes you can just use the same JavaScript in PHP also.<br />

I have seen JSP/struts pages having 'operation in progress' kind of progress status indicators which seems to be on a different JSP page and when the operation is completed, it redirects to another page. I m not refering to doing a pop up before submit and closing the popup on unload of the page.<br />
