Windows XP Crashes when certain programs run (particularly programs accessing port info)

Hello,
I have been experiencing the "Blue Screen of Death" for awhile with certain programs. I have learned to avoid certain actions in programs to avoid a computer crash.

One of the major programs that I have a major issue with is Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1. In ActiveSync, the computer only crashes when I try to access the 'Connection Settings...' of the program. I have searched the internet for others with the same problem and the only couple ideas are to reinstall the program and delete unneeded ports with the Device Manager do to the fact that "ActiveSync is attempting to identify what ports are installed on your desktop and it thinks that there is a IR port". I have attempted both of these methods and I haven't had any luck in stopping this issue. Reinstalling the program just causes more of a hassle and I can't seem to identify the IR hardware that is supposed to be installed although my computer does not have an IR port.

Another program that causes this "blue screen of death" are WebJal and MyJal which are programs that connect to your mobile phone through a data cable in order for you to move java applications to your device.  These programs will not even open without showing the " STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" error message. When the computer restarts and I open an internet browser, it immediately directs me to this page: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=158f4741-b919-4bb9-9202-e7924124cace&SID=11. Which basically says that my video device driver is outdated and I might need to decrease the hardware acceleration for my video adapter.

I tried this silution also with immenent failure. After I updated the driver, brought the hardware acceleration down to none, and disabled write combining I still recieved the same message.

I blame these consistent crashes on port errors of some sort but I am not very sure what exactly. I say port errors because it seems that all these programs share the same objective of obtaining connectivity to outside devices through my computers ports. These are the only reasons I have observed lately that cause my computer to crash and I am lost at what I am to do next because these programs are really necessary to what I need to do.

Please provide your expertise in this issue and it will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I have tried disabling the firewall and antivirus software [no luck :( ]

zephyr_hex: I looked in the event viewer but truthfully I don't have a clue what I am looking for. What should I be seeing?

venom96737: For Microsoft ActiveSync, the device includes a HP hx2755 Pocket PC and a Motorola MPX220. And for WebJal/ MyJal it is a Boost Mobile Motorola i415 cell phone.

moh10ly: Give me some details on changing the VGA card or is there a specific way to test this card for errors solely?

I also failed to mention another program that caused my computer to crash. The device happened to be through TI-Link (the software for my graphing calculator). When I connect my TI-83 Plus Silver to the computer and access a certain portion of the program that allows communication between the calculator and the computer, the computer fails.

Thanks for the quick response.

I think you may have a browser hijack if you are being redirected to another web page, firstly run a disc cleanup from start all programs accessories sytem tools.

VGA is the standard generic driver if you having a problems with your disply or nvidia card start your computer tapping F8 then choose start in vga mode windows will now boot normally but not use your nvidia card this provides the opportunity to uninstall the nvidia card current drivers and re-install or roll back the drivers as it is not in use.

Whenever your pc has a error it records it as an event, in control panel administrative tools event viewer>applications
click on the applications and you may see a few red circles with  white x in teh center, db click on one and it opens a small display box describing the event with an identifable number for that event. Loks similar to this:

Event Type:      Error

BSOD usually points to a bad driver.
Error message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
MS Article:
SYMPTOMS
You may receive one of the following Stop error messages:
STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M
CAUSE
This issue may occur if the display driver is caught in an infinite loop while it waits for the video hardware to become idle. This issue typically indicates a problem with the video hardware or that the display driver cannot program the hardware correctly.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, obtain and install the most current driver for your video adapter, or replace your video card.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
2. On the Settings tab, click Advanced, and then click the Troubleshoot tab.
3. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then click to clear the Enable Write Combining check box.
4. Click OK, and then click OK.

Note This procedure prevents the display driver from programming the hardware incorrectly, but you may lose some display functionality and performance. Although you can increase the hardware acceleration settings higher than None to regain functionality and performance, these settings increase the chance that the issue will occur again. For maximum stability, leave hardware acceleration off.
MORE INFORMATION
This Stop error message may also occur in video adapter drivers that do not represent a physical device. For example, this Stop error message may occur in the virtual video adapter driver that is used by Symantec PCAnywhere. If PCAnywhere is installed on a computer where this error message occurs, visit the Symantec Web site to determine if there are any available fixes for your version of PCAnywhere.

Try this solution if you can still get to windows to disable the HW acceleration.

I probably as said before think it's a hardware conflict, I'm not saying your VGA is not working but do this only for the test purpose and it's probably caused due to a conflict with another HW input which is might be the USB or the mobile connectors...

Good Luck

Greetings techadvanced06

Sorry for being late on replying you, I meant by >>>> Disable any built-in NIC settings on your BIOS too, is to disable your Lan card which is must be located on your BIOS onboard Menu if it was a built-in LAN card..

To enter to your BIOS, when you first boot up your computer you will see a black screen with a post down the screen Telling you if you want to goto setup Press " F2 or DEL or ESC" It depends on the BIOS type..
Check this link...
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/reinstall-reformat-winxp/enter-BIOS.html

And for the Comment >>> Have you tried with Ram and VGA only, I meant that you have to take your computer case off and take out all the Other cards and boot up only with those "VGA & Ram sticks" If the computer didn't work then try using a new VGA, then you can try and connect the data cable and check if you will get the BSOD again..

Try to change the Cable data and get a new one, also try to change the input plug...

Hope this helps.

Do you have slaved hdd? techadvanced06
 named D:\ drive,
Go to administrative tools/computer management/disk management in control panel and see which one is showing as disk 1. Although that may not help. Every system seems to follow it's own rules. Some systems report the IDE channels as 0 and 1 other show them as 1 and 2. So unless you know, channel 1 device  can be your slave drive or your slave ROM.
Anyway.....Go to start/run and type in
Msinfo32.exe

Go through the list and see if you see any conflicts. It will tell you. Also go to error reporting on the bottom and see if the problem was reported and if it lists a driver causing the problem.

 On this same subject:
if it is a slave  HDDdrive. ROM Drive?
try unplugging this hdd while unpower complete pull out the power cable, unplug the ide cable and power ( white) now power in again reboot. and see if your problem is solved.
If it is solved then your D drive is in trouble.
Do these programs you are having problems with installed on this hdd?
If it is your rom drive try the same. Unplug it

Hello techadvanced06

Have you tried to run your computer with a single monitor ? maybe this could be due to a signal distribution between the monitors, This cause your VGA card to work harder with one single monitor as I guess..

If this didn't work ? Try to change the monitors both of them and plug your computer with a new one to check if it will act normal ..

btw, have you disable your lan card on bios ?? If you don't know how then try disabling it by going to the device manager..

Forgot to ask you ..! Have you tested your ram yet ??

MereteCommented:
yes the first signs if your prudent is the clock and date seem to be off.
An early warning of a dying battery is your clock losing time. Type time or date at the DOS prompt occasionally to check and to reset your time and date. If your clock loses more than, say, one minute a day, or you get occasional "Clock failure" or "Clock error" messages upon startup, suspect a dying CMOS battery. Also, try resetting your CMOS without replacing the battery. Then, when your PC is running, turn it off and restart it. If you can restart it fine after turning it off for three minutes, but leaving it off overnight causes lost or changed CMOS settings, then your battery is weak and needs replacing.

you'll flip on your PC's power and it'll beep, stop, and say, "Invalid Configuration. Run Setup or press F1 to continue." You press F1, only to be told, "Invalid drive specification," before your computer stops dead in its tracks. It's trying to tell you that information it needs from a tiny piece of special memory called CMOS has gone to lunch. This is similar to your VCR "forgetting" the time and channel settings when it's unplugged, but more serious because it disables the system. The cause of its amnesia is often the tiny battery, this is  needed to keep the CMOS memory alive while your computer is off.

This is why I suggest checking the cmos battery first, it is so important and also so cheap to replace and probably fix the problems saving time and money instead of chasing endless suggestions .
Cheers Merete

And about disk 1, I will check the configuration for the drive internally and I will see what I can find out to be happening. I haven't played around with this computer too much internally so I don't think I might have messed up that drive. But I will still check.

Do you have a raid setup?

Secondary Master: D:/ (Cd Writer)<-------which ide cable is this sitting on
Secondary Slave: E:/ (DVD)<-------is this sitting on teh 2nd ide cable behind the first cdrom drive.

Please NOTE:
Look at the drives do you see you have C:\   AUTO??:\<--- what is this    D:\ E:\

in control panel/ administrative tools/ computer management> DISC MANAGEMENT< look on the right panel for all your drives.
If you have 4 drives the order should be C: D: E: F you are missing one . Be cause you have one that states  >auto<. Is the pin on the rear of this drive in the wrong place?
This is the problem, even your events say this is the problem D drive.
Type: Error
Source: Disk
Event ID: 11
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D.
What thi smeans is what should be hard disc 1 D is in fact using the wrong ide.
Remove what ever is sitting on the master ide cable (second position) behind the windows C drive HDD.

Have a look in disc management there will be a drive that has a problem with its ide position.
Here is a couple of pictures of disc management

Just shutdown your computer, pull out the power plug, using a flat nosed pliers gently prize out the power and ide cables from> the cd-rom/ dvd rom and the other >auto< whatever behind the windows drive .
Power in again.
Now boot without all of them. Only C drive.
That should clear things.
Please unpower then add one by one. Boot. Check computer management or my computer to see the drives.

The order of the drives has always been the same since the purchase date unless HP made a mistake on setup. And I personally havent touched these drives, the only thing I have done is added a new VGA card, 512 MB of memory, and a USB 2.0 card.

And moh10ly, my compter passed the memory test so everything seems cool on that front.

I also tried another option other than booting in safe mode. This time I booted the computer with a Diagnostic Startup, which I setup through msconfig.  The diagnostic startup only loads the basic devices and services. Even in this type of startup, the computer still crashes when I access WebJal.  This tells me its not conflicting software but could possibly be a bad driver or something of that sort. How might I hunt down a bad driver?

I forced the computer to crash again by clicking on 'Connection Settings' in ActiveSync at 12:15 PM EST. I checked the error log when the computer restarted and there wasn't an error message there of any sort during that time, just information.

After I sent an error report to Microsoft, it did identify the crash as being caused by an "Unknown Device Driver". This is what the message exactly said:

Error type        :        Windows stop error (A message appears on a blue screen with error code information)
Solution available?       :       No (see Next steps)
What does this error mean?       :       Windows has encountered an error from which it cannot recover and needs to restart
Cause       :       Unknown device driver
Computer symptoms       :       A message appears on a blue screen with error code information (for example: e.g. 0x0000001E, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED)
Additional steps for you to take       :       Important: Please continue to send error reports so analysts at Microsoft can study and try to

What's connected to your computer on boot up? Any ( USB printers, Exteral HDD, LAN Cable, ...etc)

Try disconnecting each of them on each boot and try to check if the crash will occur or not..!

I still doubt it's your LAN card... Try taking it out

Ok, I will disable the LAN card through BIOS. I never actually did that. I still have everything that is related to the USB disconnected.  The only things I have connected are:

Serial Printer

Mic
Ethernet Modem

MereteCommented:
yes please,
disble the dual monitors. Put it back to Single.
Unplug all usb devices including your rom drives.
you only need the one hdd to boot windows,
this is just find out if you simply have too much added and may need to consider a faster PSU.
If windows does not crash after running on just the hdd then add one cdrom check the pin is in correct position.

techadvanced06 what devices have you added recently, did you say more ram, vga card as in nvidia card?

btw did this start after you added the nvidia card, just as a point of reference.
How big is your PSU and processor speed?

I have seen computer crashes non boots simply from adding a video card that was too fast for the PSU
and as it was unable to run with this card.
The client bought the extra external nvidia card to support the flat screen monitor as it usb only supports the connector from this card not on the mainboard.
But her PSU could not run this card as well so windows shutdown its own power supply to save the computer.

I added the NVIDIA card and the extra RAM a couple years ago, the most recent addition I had were the USB ports and this problem was really started well before all of this. This is a very old problem for me that has survived a couple destructive recoveries. This problem tends to show up as I add more and more devices and programs.

The computer that I have is a HP Pavilion 7955. It has the following specs:

Intel Pention IV 1.5 ghz
768 MB SDRAM
40 GB Hard Drive
nVidia Verto 128 MB DDR GeForce FX 5500 AGP 8x
CD-RW Drive
DVD Drive

I agree, if your computer becomes outdated the parts get old sometimes it is not enough to simply upgrade the drivers. Add more ram
Your procesor is fine, but the ram is a bit slow for xp.
1 gig of ddr is better. Does your mainboard support ddr? There should be two dins dimms lol one blue for ddr? The other sdram.
768 MB SDRAM is not as good a ddr. 768 is an odd number too.
This also shows your mainboard is older.

Are you running xpsp2?
Consider upgrading to xpsp2.

Also could you get a torch and have a look at your PSU (power supply Unit) it is the box that has the cpu fan. it will show the output at top  left somewhere.

How did your computer run with only the HDD? And your nvidia card.
Do you still have the onboard video card?

>>>> This problem tends to show up as I add more and more devices and programs.

Then it should be one of two issues, might be an over heating problemwith the processor or the Power supply is not taking your devices anymore, First Try booting up your computer, take the cover off and all the devices hooked up, Then once the computer crashes take processor fan of it and touch the processor surface by your fingers to check if its temp is heated, If so then you should change the fan and get a better one that should cool it and this would avoid any further crashes for sure.. I have seen a thread about cooling tools for strong CPUs.. this would help also , check the following link to it...

Merete: I am running xpsp2 and the computer originally had 256 MB of memory. Then I added a 512 MB card. Both cards are type: SDRAM and format: DIMM and have a speed of PC133. Here are some links to my products:

RAM (http://www.centon.com/products/product_detail/0286-0005)
VGA Card (http://pny.com/products/verto/value/5500agp.asp)
Stock Computer Specs (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=62740&dlc=en&docname=bph07293)

Also, the new RAM Module is wrapped in with a heat spreader. After you look at the Stock Computer Specs link you will see that I only have 3 DIMM slots that can not equal more than 1 GB.  Also, the max space suggested can not surpass 80 GB total. And yes, I do still have the original video card and it is only 32 MB.

=========================
moh10ly: I have run diagnostic tests on my RAM and computer to see if it actually overheats, but it does not seem to do so. If you have any specific tests you would like me to run to see exactly, please give me links. My computer seems to run fine, because I am a high performance user and I do tend to leave my computer on for days on end. I tend to run Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Firefox, AIM, and my smaller programs such as my mail notifier, FreeRAM XP, ActiveSync, Mcafee all in unison without major malfunctioning. My computer does not even tend to freeze.

Well Techadvanced06, I have run through alot of threads which discuss the same issue and one of them was the following link ..

http://groups.google.com.ly/group/microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync/browse_thread/thread/5c884d8b7e62c56a/783d5a0017d6ef5e?lnk=st&q=Microsoft+ActiveSync+4.1+crash+windows&rnum=6&hl=en#783d5a0017d6ef5e

The MS-MVP seems to not know what is causing this issue, also the AS program developers seems to test it with same Comp Specs of alot of people but to no avail to solve it's problem, They say it's a program bug, and in the mean time it seems like a kind of conflict with some CPU chips or some output ports, I suggest that you try to restart your computer with NOTHING connected to it, then you can start using the active Sync only and try then to transfer data to your mobile, before that try going to the event viewer to see for any errors being reported there, Also double click on your clock  next to the systray icons and when the clock box appears choose the internet time tab then choose to "Automatically synchronize with an Internet Time Server", Also disable your Mcafee Program before the transfer starts to avoid any conflict between them if exists...

Regarding your Webjal program,  Try to close any opened browser. Also when you close your browser the java engine might be still running which might cause your system to crash. If you force closing the program and re-starting webjal probably will work fine.

Hope This helps.

You say this problem of computer locks has been on going for a long time before adding new hardware.

This may help you:
ActiveSync 4.1 problems From another Forum with similar problem.

I was having trouble my new X51v syncing with 4.0 so I uninstalled activesync and downloaded/installed 4.1.

Now when I put the Axim in the cradle, Activesync starts up, ID's the Axim, opens a little window saying "Retrieving Settings" which stays up forver. Activesync and its little buddy were there all night, even though Task Manager said they were both still "Running." Most of the time it shows them as Not Responding.

Possible Solution was:
If you are runnng Avantgo, uncheck it under ActiveSync...Tools...Options. That did the trick on one of my computers.
http://www.aximusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5980
any VPN installed on your PC? or other software which assignes TCPIP-adresses?
Uninstall those - at least temporary. Activesync 4.0+4.1 create problems on the TCP/IPs which lock the sync (at the best) or create bluescreens on the PC.

Do a hard reset on  axim x5 in order for it to work

it looks to me like you have two of the same installed thio scan cause these to crash.
As you stated it owrks in safemode, in safemode system devices uninstall all the usb there and then reboot.
When two or more devices are using the same port it willnot work.
It happens sometimes when your trying to fix something and re-install when it was not installed correctly, such as plugging in a usb device while another was nto correctly unplugged.

You can see in your list of network adapters there is two or more of the same. Everywhere you see the #2 is the overlapping device to fix this you have remove both.
Boot to safemode and uninstall all of them. rebbot plugging the default one and wiondows should detect the correct one.

I deleted all duplicate devices and the computer still easily crashes. The only device that would not allow me to delete it was the Packet Scheduler Miniport #4 and it really isn't a duplicate device, it is just listed as being #4 for whatever reason. Also, is there any software that checks the device manager for errors?
0

MereteCommented:
did you try this in safemode?
I hope you uninstalled them not deleted them? There is a very big difference.
To use these as an example, WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)
WAN Miniport (Network Monitor) -Packet Scheduler Miniport
you can see that network monitor is installed and then the packet scheduler works with the network monitor
It is like when you install a modem then modem inumerator installs, if the modem is installed incorrectly the numerator will not uninstall as it dependent on the modem, therefor the way to go is to uninstall all dependencies in safemode.

It looks like this blue tooth is your main problem, unplug the device before accessing safemode to uninstall all of them as a way to to hopefully fix any bottlenecks.
You do have a lot of USB devices.

Also can you please provide the setup you have there, looking at your usb devices it does look like a cross the board connections,

*1394 Net Adapter<<< The 1394 net adapter is a firewire adapter with networking capability. The system control panel lists this under network adapters, even though the 1394 adapter probably isn't being used as a network adapter for the computer. So ignore that one and focus on the other ethernet adapter.

*Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)<<<Bluetooth is an industrial specification for  "wireless personal area networks" (PANs), also known as IEEE 802.15.1.

Direct Parallel<<< so why you are using a direct parrallel cable?? Whom are you connected to?

Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection<<<is this your default network?
Intel (R) Pro/100 VE Dos NIC drivers
