I therefore tried to open it with the pin and thjough I have taken out the cdrom but there is stilla light on the cdrom and the system is not shutting down. It is just showing a moving icon of cdrom on a finder window. WHat can I do to restart the system.

You could also try a force quit. Pull down the Apple Menu to Force Quit and force quit whatever is preventing the shut down
