Bad Pool Header error on boot-up

Strange problem here:

PC running XP home, was all working fine until I had to re-format the HD.

PC was up and running again, connected to the net via a Netgear USB wireless modem - no problems

Did a Windows update, installed SP2, now the PC will not boot with the Netgear modem attached (it worked fine with SP2 before the re-format)
I can boot up using a Belkin wireless modem and it all works with no problems.  All the other XP updates have been installed.

The error I get on boot up, before the windows logo screen appears is:

BAD_POOL_HEADER
blah de blah de blah blah

Then does a memory dump and sits there doing nothing.

Aslo - if I allow the PC to boot up and then plug the adaptor in the screen goes blank then comes up with the same error message.

Any ideas?

uninstall the drivers for the netgear and boot up with it inserted windows should have drivers that will work with it so just install the windows drivers and it should work fine.  Just dont install the drivers from the netgear disc use the windows drivers.

BAD_POOL_HEADER

This is, perhaps, the most obscure error message. In most cases, if you receive this error, it's related to the most recent change you've made on your system. Try undoing the change to get rid of the error.

I have tried uninstalling the drivers completely and still no joy.

I am going to uninstall SP2 and install the new drivers from the Netgear site before re-installing SP2.

If all else fails I will throw the modem in the bin.

I have tried that - I uninstalled all the Netgear drivers and the machine still crashed as soon as the modem was plugged in.

If your modem driver is not icfwdm, attach 5 to 6 mindumps at the following free download website http://www.rapidshare.de/

Post the url of the minidumps here.

Sorry I have left it so long - not had much time with the offending computer.

No one solution really worked but the post by cpc2004 in the thread linked by zuhair pointed me in the right direction.

It turned out to be a conflict somewhere between sp2 and the *new* netgear drivers that I had downloaded.

I removed SP2, installed the new drivers first, then re-installed SP2 and it all seems fine now.

(venom - the windows drivers didn't work but thanks for the tip - it might be useful in the future)
