I always think that the latest version (Studio 8) is most likely more valuable- intuitively, it should have more features, stability and value.  But then, I remember when QuarkXpress went from version 5 to 6 and that sort of destroys my thought process...

FWIW,

Get Studio 8!  They made a ton of enhancements to all the programs.  Yes MX will be cheaper but do you really want to spend your time learning old technology?

Probably about a 500 difference between the two...  but your time spent learning studio 8 will be much more valuable to you...

If you're a student, get the academic version...

The new things about Studio8 is that it comes with Macromedia Contribute and Flash paper. Contribute is for multi-developers to work on the same project without losing track of updates. Flash paper is new format to publish on the internet (idea like PDF) but I haven't used much myself and hardly hear people talk about it. Another generous thing for Macromedia (now Adobe) was they allowed users to upgrade from any macromedia product no matter how it was (Not sure if now Adobe is offering the same condition though). Overall, it's worth buying it.

get studio8. it's much better. you may find it a little bit strange in dreamweaver, cos' now the font code is not HTML code anymore, it now embedds a CSS style to all font modifications you make... and flash 8 is much better, although it now looks a lot like dreamweaver.

get the trial and test it. i bet you'll prefer 8 to MX.
