Short freezes everything but the mouse

My trusty desktop (Windows XP), has started freezing for 10 seconds or so every ~10 minutes or so. No spike shows up in the taskmanager and nothing shows up in the event log, but everything freezes (including the BBC news ticker) for the duration of the freeze apart from the mouse. It has been doing this for just over a week now. What should I be looking at?

It could be the network card searching for something and not finding it.  The entire system can come to a halt if the NIC isn't working properly.

Can you think of a good way of seeing if that it the case?

    Accepted Solution

Given how cheap NICs are, I would just swap it out.  The time you spend troubleshooting can end up costing much more than new hardware.

That's very wise. I'll do that.
