Setting up a cisco 2900XL and a 2950 switch for a small office

I'm very new to setting up switchs but I do understand the concepts of gateways, routers, switches, ect.  I know how it's suppose to work, but I have no idea how to configure these things.  This is what I have.

I have a small office with DSL and 6 servers.  The 6 servers will be using a Cisco 2900XL to communicate between then.  Can this switch handle teaming (Okay, I'll ask that later).

I have about 12 users that will use a Cisco 2950 switch to connect to the 2900xl.  I want the 2950 to uplink to the 2900xl and then out through the DSL.

I'm trying to read through the book and it tells me to connect the console port to my COM port (which I've done) then run a terminal enumlator program?  I'm sorry, I haven't run one of those since I work in Colbat back in '95.  So you could say I'm stupified.

Also the book mentions a Cisco management software.  So I went to the cisco site and it looks like there is 10-20 of these managment softwares to use.  Crap, it's like looking at a Java/Sun update.

Can someone tell me how to connect to these darn things, and recommend how I configure them?

Good news is that for your particular needs, these puppies are virtually plug and play. Unless you plan to monitor them with snmp or setup vlans or something like that, just plug them in. Only trick is that you need a crossover cable to connect the two switches together.
FYI, use Hyperterminal that's available on every Windows system. Start | Programs | Accessories | Communications | Hyperterm
For switch management, use Cisco Network Assistant 4.0  http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5931/index.html

No. Actually there is no configuration required. Just plug them in and use a crossover cable to uplink the two.

CNA should be a free download, there is just a validation requirement for encryption technology export which requires a CCO registration. If you buy a smarnet maintenance package for the 2950 switch you can get all the software you need...else just register using the serial number (assuming you bought it legit)..

Thanks lrmoore!!

You were right.. got the crossover cable to connect and it worked.  I registed them and got the software to work.

It's nice to have someone who knows what they are doing!!
