ISA Server 2004 slow when using authentication

What could be the cause of slow loading times when using authentication in ISA 2004?

We have to use authentication as we have Surf Control so turning it off isn't an option.

The initial page can take up to a minute to load, once the first page has loaded it seems fine.

Any ideas or similar experiences?

Thank you

Is this isa server a member of and authenticating to a domain? If so then it might be a DNS issue. Make sure the only dns servers listed on the server are internal dns servers that know about your ad domain. Typically these are the domain controllers but don't have to be. Don't list your ISP's nameservers on the ISA server.

I have ISA 2004 with surfcontrol but I dont use authentication. Mine is on a school network where kids don't have user accounts so it doesnt make sense to use it for me. I have tried authentication before with this setup however and it seemed to go smoothly.
