Exchange Activesync is only working one way

I am finally getting the sync to work, but it seems it's one way. I see that when it's syncing it shows the correct amout of data on the phone, Ie. 480 contacts, 244 emails, but I'm not seeing the actual data on my Pocket PC (PPC-6700.) Now my contacts have multiplied into 2430 and I have in my outlook I can have the same contact three times, but it never goes on my device. The contact issue I will post as another question once this is resolved.

Even though both of these refer to 2003SE, I have already done both of these instructions. I have had a coworker try as well with a Treo 700W, he had the same issue. I'm thinking it has something to do with the setting on the server.

My sync network article isn't really suitable for this question. It is for Windows 2003 SE and older as the sync over the network feature was removed in Active Sync 4.0.

I also believe that this is Exchange ActiveSync, so neither of the articles posted above apply.

Try to sync with a new account. EAS is very sensitive and a single corrupt item will cause the process to stop. It will not log anything - just do nothing.

Simon.
Simon, where would I atleast see the log?

The stange thing is that it's happening to another device/user as well. So I don't think it would be a new account would make the difference.

-Y
There are no usable logging facilities in EAS - you just find that it doesn't work, or throws a cryptic error message.
While you have existing data, there is always a chance that you have a problem with that data. I always do the initial testing with a new account, then fill it with data. If it doesn't break then I know the feature is working correctly. It fails with a new empty account (perhaps with a single email message to christen the mailbox) then I have a more serious problem.

Simon.
Well, it seems we have a more serious problem.

-Y
EAS either works or it doesn't,
Does it work inside? Take out the external connection and get the device connected to your LAN.
If you can't do that, then try the emulator.
http://www.amset.info/pocketpc/wm5emulator.asp

Simon.
I ran thru the emulation steps, and am running the .dess files. It is "Synchronizing folders" for 10 Min. without showing me the files, or data.

-Y
It came back with a message about not finding the server. I had used the internal hostname as the server.
-Y
My Mistake. I had Zone Alarm On. I shut it down and now The device is going thru to the screen that has me putting in my device address....
Looks like the emulator is working internally.

-Y
If the emulator is working inside, then you have to start looking at what is different. Firewall would be a good place to start.
If possible, take the emulator outside your network - what you need to do is avoid the mobile phone network for testing.

Simon.
turns out the emulator had the same issue, wasn't downloading anything. it was seeing the data that needed to be synced, but wasn't pulling it to the device.
That would indicate a serverside issue.
Does the emulator have the same problem with a new account?

Simon.
I didn't try it, but I would assume so. I have had 2 devices try it with three different accounts in addition to the emulator. I think it's server side... any idea's?
I haven't seen a problem with the server that causes that before.
EAS problems are usually down to one of three things...

- authentication
- certificate
- object in the account.

The feature is also an all or nothing feature - it either works or it doesn't.

Simon.
It is authenticating, I added device security, and the device prompted me to add password.
Well, I am using a self certified cert, but I added it to the phones trusted root.
What object in the account/s could it be?

-Y
No idea on what object - corrupt item usually - which is why I was asking you to use a blank account. That proves whether it is an object or not.

Simon.
Well, I tried it with a new account, and it was doing the same thing. Syncing the data on my device to the mailbox/contacts, but not putting anything to the device.
-Y

I have no idea then.
I would probably start tearing the server apart - looking for anything that could be causing the traffic to be blocked.
Firewalls, antivirus, any other third party applications.

I have only ever seen it account related - not serverwide before.

Simon.
Can't believe it...I have stumped the Hall Of Famer.
Thanks for your help.

-Y
I do get beaten sometimes. This is new technology, only been around for a couple of months, and those that support the application have had to start at the beginning with everything else.
With Exchange 2007 the MVPs already have access to the BETAs, so when it is eventually released we will be up to speed and able to help support it from the start.

Simon.
Funny, think happened last night. I went onto the OWA for that new account. While I didn't see the emails or calender coming thru to the device, I saw the contacts on the OWA page, when I deleted them off the page I didn't think anything of it, until I noticed later on that my device that the contacts where gone.

-Y
Meaning that the delete was processed?
That may require further investigation as to whether it is doing that change regularly or not.

Simon.
Any idea where to investigate?
