Controlling spam in Public Folders

We have setup a public folder for HR emails that people can send their resumes to.  It was working fine until just recently where it has recieved a ton of spam emails which makes it difficult to go through for good emails.  Is there any way to get the built-in message filtering in exchange 2003 to catch these emails?

we are currently using:

SBS 2003 with exchange 2003 - no third party spam protection software.

many thanks for all your help.

You are going to have to look at third party software or change the way that you operate. IMF relies on the Junk Mail folder as part of its operation - that is where it puts messages that it thinks are spam. There is no junk mail folder in public folders, so it cannot do anything.

If you don't want to use third party applications then you will need to change from public folders to a shared mailbox.

do you recommend any specific third party software?
It is almost impossible to recommend anti spam software because every site is different.

The question comes up frequently on this site.
The basic rule is to try a number of products to see whether they work with the type of spam that you receive. Some filters are not as effective for certain types of business, or catch too much legitimate email.
All of the spam filtering applications have evaluation versions, so you need to start with them.

A different way to look at this would be to NOT use a Public folder and instead create a standard mailbox for this shared use.  You can then grant delegate rights to everyone to be able to access the mailbox.  But a standard mailbox will have the advantage of being filtered by Exchange's IMF.
