I am using Outlook 2003 client on an Exchange 2003 server. I have a number of archive files (pst files) that I would like to search through. I suspect this is possible, but I am not sure how. Assistance is appreciated.

Thank you...

    Hello larrystewart,

    1. in outlook if you go to the File menu you can choose open > Data file
    2. point to the archive you want to search in and open it
    3. next you can use Advanced Find in Outlook > to open it CTRL+SHIFT+F
    4. on the dialog is a button called browse, click it and you point to your archive pst that you opened earlier
    5. fill in the rest of the details you want to look for and search

you can open several archive psts this way but searching is limited to one personal folder [pst] at one time

    hope this helps a bit

    Accepted Solution

Microsoft does offer a free plug-in for Outlook which will allow you to search multiple PST files simultaneously.  As bruintje explained in his answer, the basic Outlook search feature only lets you search one PST at a time.  The extra plug-in is called LookOut 1.2 and is available for free through Microsoft on the following website:

I've started using Micorsoft Desktop Search. This runs as a Service on your system and indexes ALL commonly used files on your system - including PST files. You can download it at:

I've also used Yahoo Desktop Search (which I prefer) but was incompatable with our mail server. You could try this at

Both are very powerful searc engines, indexng the contents of each of your files and (from my point of view) are indespensible
